ABOUT DR. CHRISTIE WHITBECK-LAZENBY

Dr. Christie Whitbeck-Lazenby is a transformative leader in education, recognized for nearly four decades of impactful service in Texas public schools. Most recently serving as Superintendent of Fort Bend ISD—the sixth-largest school district in the state—she has consistently delivered results through innovative thinking, strategic vision, and a deep commitment to student success. Dr. Whitbeck now brings her leadership expertise to Region 4 Education Service Center as a Leadership Development Coach, mentoring and supporting current and aspiring educational leaders across Texas.

During her tenure at Fort Bend ISD, Dr. Whitbeck guided the district through major milestones, including surpassing 80,000 students in enrollment, navigating post-COVID school reopenings, and securing community support for a $1.26 billion bond and a VATRE to strengthen teacher salaries and campus safety. She also led efforts to close a $47 million budget deficit, achieving a balanced budget in 2023 through disciplined financial planning and transparent communication.

Prior to Fort Bend ISD, Dr. Whitbeck served as Superintendent of Bryan ISD, where she led measurable improvements in student achievement, including higher graduation rates and growth in college, career, and military readiness. Her “2 Bonds, 1 Vision” initiative modernized district facilities and programs while maintaining strong financial stewardship and community trust.

In 2025, Dr. Whitbeck-Lazenby was appointed as the first Executive Director of the Texas Council of Women School Executives (TCWSE). In this pioneering role, she advances mentorship, professional development, and the growth of women leaders across Texas.

Her leadership is also shaped by her personal faith and her belief in post-traumatic growth—a philosophy born from both professional challenges and personal loss. Christie’s resilience and compassion infuse her work with authenticity, reminding others that leadership is not about titles but about the lasting difference we leave behind.

Throughout her career, Dr. Whitbeck has been recognized for driving innovation, strengthening organizational culture, and building strong teams. She led the development of Bryan ISD’s Regional Career and Technology Center, the district-wide “Essential 8” character program, and Fort Bend ISD’s “Culture of Kindness” initiative—all rooted in her belief that great schools begin with great people. Her leadership is defined by approachability, collaboration, and a relentless focus on excellence in teaching and learning.

Dr. Whitbeck has been honored for her contributions to education with awards such as the Texas Career and Technical Education Champion of the Year, the Outstanding Alumni Early Career Award from Texas A&M University, and recognition among Houston’s Top 30 Influential Women in 2022.

Her career includes leadership roles as Deputy Superintendent of Fort Bend ISD, Assistant Superintendent of Academics in Alvin ISD, and principalships in Katy ISD, where she earned recognition for her innovative instructional leadership. She began her career as a classroom teacher in Alief ISD, driven by a lifelong passion for helping students thrive.

A summa cum laude graduate of Texas A&M University, Dr. Whitbeck holds a Ph.D. in Public School Administration, a master’s degree in Administration Supervision from the University of Houston, and a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Missouri State University.

With a leadership philosophy inspired by the idea of Bringing Out the Best in People, a lesson first instilled by her grandmother, Dr. Whitbeck continues to invest in others through mentoring, coaching, and service. In her current role at Region 4 Education Service Center, she shares her experience and expertise with fellow educators, helping them shape the future of education for students across Texas.
